The Turkish Angora cat is a domestic cat breed, it one of the ancient cats and also a natural breed, having its origin in central Turkey particularly in the region of Ankara. During the early 17th century the cat breed got originated in those areas with white colour and long hair. Sometimes the breed is simply referred to as Ankara cat or Angora. Just like all the domestic cats, Turkish Angora cats are descended from the Wildcats of Africa (Felis Silvestris Lybica). The Fertile Crescent was one of the places where the cats were domesticated first, and the cats that are from the eastern mountain regions of Anatolia started developing breeds that have long hair like the Turkish Van.
The cats with longhaired were imported to Great Britain and France from the countries of Asia Minor, Russia and Persia during the early of 16th century, although there are indications that states that these cats appeared during the early 14th century in the European countries due to the reason of Crusades. In order to improve the coat of the Persians almost most of the Turkish Angora were used to the point of extinction. During the 17th century, the Turkish Angora was recognised in Europe as a distinct breed, during the year of 1788, Charles Catton mentioned ‘Angora Cat’ and ‘Persian Cat’ in his book called Animals Drawn from Nature, and he used those names as they are the alternative names for Angora cat breeds.
The Angora cats and the Persians seem connected throughout the history, the Persian cat breed was developed by the mutations of the Turkish Angora by the American and the British cat fanciers. Although there is some cat associations think that the Persian cat is a breed of nature and in the 19th century Angoras and the Persians were became identical. In the year of 1903, a famous writer known as F. Simpson wrote a book called The Book of the Cat: and has mentioned about the Angora cats that were of the 20th century and were mainly used for the Persian coat improvement, but this type of cats were always been divergent from the Persian breeds, specifically as they were becoming increasingly as a flat-faced show cats in the Persian region and they started developing in the recent few decades. Persians started taming this breed for most of the time and it was used as the cuddling cats.
During 1963, the Turkish Angora cats were brought to Canada and it was accepted as a pedigreed breed as a championship during the year of 1973, it was done by an association called Cat Fanciers’ Association. However, till 1978 white Angoras were the only breed that got recognised by everyone. Today, all the North American registries are accepting the Turkish Angora cats that are with many patterns and colours. While the entire populations of the Angora cats are relatively small, the base of fanciers and the pool of gene are constantly growing, and due to this reason, the Angora cats have a large number of owners in the region of Turkey.
Turkish Angora cats’ appearance is pretty tidy as they have a long and silky coat and they have an elegant and sinuous body. Though these cats are known for their white and shimmery coat, there are a lot of Angora Cats that can show a variety of colours. They come in tabby-white and tabby colours, along with chocolate brown and black colours undercoat. And even for the colours there are a lot of varieties available on the cats, and there are some cats that have colours that are mixed, those are crossbred cats, some of them are lavender, pointed and chocolate. The eyes of the cat are in blue, amber, green, yellow or heterochromatic (that is either one eye would be in green, amber or blue), the ears of the cats would be wide-set and pointed. The eyes of the cat are shaped in almond and the profile of the eyes from a couple straight planes. The tail of the cat is plumed and often carried upright by perpendicular to the posterior of the cat.
